Dear Competitor

Welcome to the 14th staging of the Carsington Duathlon located in the beautiful setting of Carsington Water, Ashbourne, Derbyshire.


The event will consist of one mass start at 8.00am and will start at the top of the main car park near to the Transition area


The main gates will not be open until 6.15am and you will be directed to designated competitors car-parking area by a race official. Please note that Carsington Water operate a ‘pay & display’ system at a cost of £4.50 per day.


Registration will take place on the Sunday morning only from 6:15am to 7:40am in the Hopton Room just inside the Visitor Centre.

Please bring your BTF race licence if you have paid the reduced entry fee. If you cannot provide your licence you will need to pay the additional £5 as a non-BTF member to cover the cost of a day license.

Please find your race number from the lists displayed before registering.

You will be provided with a registration pack, which will include 2 race numbers that must be clearly visible on the front for the run and on the back for the bike.

You will also collect your timing chip which you need to make sure is securely fastened to one of your ankles. For relay teams the team captain will need to register and 2 numbers only will be provided (runners will therefore need to transfer the race number during the cycle section).


Carsington Water is an excellent venue, located in the beautiful Derbyshire countryside offering plenty of car parking, numerous shops, on site restaurant open from 10am and a great outdoors play area for the children.

The Visitor Centre is located off the B5035 between Ashbourne and Wirksworth (postcode: DE6 1ST).

Look out for the brown and white ‘Carsington Water’ signposts throughout the local area.

Toilets are plentiful and will be open from 7am.

Please note that there are no shower/changing facilities.

Please use the Visitor Centre entrance for car parking, not the sailing club entrance, as this will be closed for race use.


The transition area is in the bottom car park near to the Sailing Club entrance and the event will be using the Sailing entrance for Bike Out/In sections.

Race equipment should be placed in the transition area prior to the race start. The racking is not numbered so please leave plenty of room for other competitors. Ensure your bike is in a roadworthy condition and that you have an approved standard of helmet, this must be worn for the duration of the cycle section. You must not remove your bike from the racking without first securing your helmet and must not unfasten your helmet until your bike has been racked at the end of the cycle section. There is strictly no cycling in the transition area and bikes must only be mounted / dismounted in the designated area. The transition area will closed at 7:45am. Evidence of a race number must be provided to enable access in and out of the transition. Your bike frame sticker must also be clearly visible.

 Race Briefing

There will be a mandatory race briefing at 7.50am near to the transition area.

 Run 1 (5K)

The first run will start at the top car park and head towards Sheepwash car park (clock-wise direction around the waters). At Sheepwash car park you will run around the cone and retrace your steps. However when you arrive at the Visitor Centre continue along the path (not the top of the car park) and past the main visitor centre and back to the transition area. Please note when running always keep to your left.

Bike (30K)

After leaving transition area turn immediate right up the hill and out of the Sailing Club entrance and turn left onto the main road. At cross roads turn left, continue until T-junction, where you will turn left onto A517 towards Belper. Continue for approx 2 miles until Cross ‘O’ the Hands crossroads and turn left down steep decent. The road veers left onto the B5023 onto Wirksworth Road. Continue on rolling section of course for approx.4 miles over a mini-island and through Wirksworth Market Place and past Petrol station on left hand side. Immediately past petrol station turn left up towards Middleton Top. Upon reaching Middleton Top turn left at crossroads on B5035 and follow signs back to Carsington Water. Take the 2nd entrance (Sailing Club entrance) back and dismount at line. The course is undulating and so a high gear ratio may be needed for some less experienced Duathletes. This is a non-drafting event and competitors shall on no account take pace from another cyclist or vehicle and not ride two or more abreast unless overtaking.

Run 2 (5K)

This is the same run as Run 1 with the only difference being that the first section is on the bridle path and not thecar park.

Remember to keep left when running!

 Relay Teams

You will need to pass the timing chip between competitors, please make sure the chip is securely fastened before you start you leg of the Duathlon.

Only the cyclist will need to rack their bike, change-overs will take place at the allocated relay area which will be at the run in/out side of transition.

Therefore the cyclist will perform both transitions and the runner will not enter the transition area. The 1st runner will tag the cyclist – the cyclist will have one number attached to their back – the runner will have one number attached to their front.

 Feed Stations

There will be 2 feed stations one near to the transition area, which will be used for both run sections and one on the finish line.

There will be no feed station on the bike section and athletes are encouraged to bring their own water bottle.

The feed stations will be manned by High Five nutrition offering High Five nutrition drink & water.

 Event Rules

The race is run in accordance with British Triathlon Federation (BTF) rules, which can be viewed on their website or phone BTF HQ on 01509 226161. There will be a race referee present throughout the day and any penalties will be at his discretion.

All competitors must obey the rules of the road and most importantly if you hear the sirens of any emergency vehicle you must by law pull over and stop.

The prize ceremony will take place near the finish area (weather permitting) at approximately10.45am.

1st Junior Male & Female (Under 20)
